Fable Friendships

A Night of Poetry
Recently, I attended the Connecticut Writing Project Celebration.
It was a special evening because both our poems received Platinum Honors, and I had the opportunity to read it aloud during the event.

Reading in front of an audience can be a little nerve-racking, but it was also exciting to share my poem with people who enjoy reading and writing. One of my favorite parts of the evening was listening to pieces written by students from across Connecticut. Every piece was different, and each writer had a unique voice.
One thing I especially enjoyed was listening to keynote speaker Jennifer De Leon. Her talk reminded me that good writing often begins by paying attention to the small details around us. It made me think about how many of my own writing ideas come from everyday observations and experiences.
Many of the ideas that inspire my writing come from Fable Friendships. Listening to stories, memories, and conversations from the seniors has helped me become a better observer and writer. I also practiced reading my poem out loud during our weekly visits, which helped me feel more prepared for the celebration.
I was also excited that my sister’s and my writing were recognized in other categories during the celebration.

I am grateful to the Connecticut Writing Project for supporting young writers and creating opportunities for students to share their work.
The evening left me feeling inspired to keep writing poems, stories, and essays. I am already looking forward to filling more notebooks with new ideas.

Most of all, I am thankful to the seniors at Fable Friendships. Their stories, memories, and conversations have inspired so much of my writing, and they continue to remind me that every person has a story worth listening to.
